Vaginal Boils: Causes, Home Remedies, And Prevention
By being aware of your menstrual cycle and the changes that occur in your body during this period, you can know when you are most likely to get pregnant. See how the menstrual cycle works.
The average menstrual cycle lasts 28 days. But normal cycles can vary from 21 to 35 days. The time before ovulation is different for every woman and can vary from month to month in the same woman, ranging from 13 to 20 days. Learning about this part of the cycle is important because it is the time when ovulation and pregnancy can occur. After ovulation, every woman (unless she has health problems that affect menstruation or becomes pregnant) will start her period within 14-16 days.
Knowing when you are most fertile can help you plan your pregnancy. You can track your fertility in three ways. They are:
Some women want children, but either cannot get pregnant or continue to miscarry. This is called infertility. Many couples have problems with infertility. About a third of the time it’s a female problem. In another third of the cases, it is a man with a fertility problem. In the remaining third, both partners have fertility problems or no cause is found.

Age – Women generally experience some decline in fertility starting in their 30s. And while many women in their 30s and 40s have no problem conceiving, fertility declines, especially after age 35. As a woman ages, the normal changes that occur in her ovaries and eggs make it more difficult to get pregnant. Although a woman’s menstrual cycle continues to be regular in her 30s and 40s, the eggs she ovulates each month are of lower quality than those in her 20s. Getting pregnant is more difficult when the eggs are of lower quality. As a woman approaches menopause, her ovaries may not release an egg each month, which can also make it harder to get pregnant. Also, as a woman and her eggs age, she is more likely to miscarry and give birth to a child with genetic problems such as Down syndrome.
Health problems – Some women have diseases or conditions that affect their hormone levels, which can cause infertility.
Common problems related to the female reproductive system, such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis, and pelvic inflammatory disease, can worsen with age and also affect fertility. These conditions can cause a blockage in the fallopian tubes, preventing the egg from passing through the tubes to the uterus.
Lifestyle factors – Certain lifestyle factors can also negatively affect a woman’s fertility. Examples include smoking, drinking alcohol, being much more or less than ideal weight, excessively vigorous exercise, and disordered eating. Stress can also affect fertility.
Getting Pregnant After 40
Unlike women, some men remain fertile into their 60s and 70s. But as men age, they may start to have problems with sperm shape and movement. They also have a slightly higher risk of genetic defects in sperm. Either they produce no sperm or very few sperm. Lifestyle choices can also affect a man’s sperm count and quality. Alcohol and drugs can temporarily reduce sperm quality. And researchers are investigating whether environmental toxins, such as pesticides and lead, may also be responsible for some cases of infertility. Men may also have health problems that affect their sexual and reproductive functions. These may include sexually transmitted infections (STIs), diabetes, prostate surgery or a serious injury or problem with the testicles.
If you have fertility problems, your doctor may refer you to a fertility specialist, a doctor who treats infertility. Your doctor will need to examine both you and your partner to find out what the problem is. Depending on the problem, the doctor may recommend treatment. About 9/10 cases of infertility are treated with drugs or surgery.
For some couples, adoption or fostering offers a way to share their love with a child and start a family.
Finding the cause of infertility is often a long, complicated and emotional process. And treatment can be expensive. Many health insurance companies do not offer infertility coverage or offer only limited coverage. Check your health insurance carefully to see what it covers. Some states have laws that require health insurance to provide coverage for infertility.
Things To Know About Ovulation
If infertility is a problem for you, another option may be adoption. Adopting a baby or child can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. So many babies, children, and teenagers in the United States and around the world need a family. Some of them are healthy babies, and many are children with special needs, including physical, emotional or intellectual disabilities. If you adopt a child with special needs, there is also federal and state financial assistance available to help you afford child care.
State laws vary as to whether, after a certain period of time, a closed adoption record can be opened later to reveal that information. State laws also differ on whether an adoption can be processed through an adoption agency or independently (such as through a doctor, attorney, counselor, or independent agency). Most adoption agencies carefully screen and vet adopters. For more information about adoption, see the resources at the end of this section.
Another option for couples who have a lot of love to share with their child is foster care. Unlike adoption, foster care is a temporary service that responds to crises in the lives of children and families. But it can also be the first step towards adopting a child. Many foster children have been abused, neglected or removed by court order. Foster families are people who take these children into their homes to provide daily care and nurturing. Children in foster care can live with close foster parents, relatives, prospective adoptive families, or in group homes or foster care centers. Although foster care is considered a temporary service, many children must remain in foster care for long periods of time.
Every child in foster care must have a plan for growing up in a permanent family. Many children plan to return to their birth parents. In these cases, foster families can work with the birth parents and the child to help them learn the skills they need to live together again. Foster parents must be able to love the children living in their home and leave them when it is time to return them to their parents. Returning other children to their parents is not possible and foster parents can become adoptive parents. Or they may maintain other types of formal or informal relationships with their parents’ children.

Each state has its own rules regarding foster care. But chances are you are a foster parent in your state. There are far more children in need of care than there are foster parents. To fill this gap, states are looking for people who want to help children and can share their time and their homes. States also offer foster parents a variety of support, such as education and financial support.
If you’re having trouble getting pregnant, you know how frustrating it can be. Not being able to conceive can be one of the most stressful experiences for a couple. And counseling and support groups can help you and your partner talk about your feelings and meet other couples struggling with the same issues. You learn that anger, sadness, guilt, blame, and depression are normal. Couples can overcome infertility and become closer and stronger in the process. Ask your doctor for the names of fertility counselors or therapists.
