While I’m so excited about welcoming this little guy to the world, I’m also excited about everything related to pregnancy. In the 7th month of pregnancy, gardening becomes more and more difficult. In fact, there is always something difficult in gardening from day one.
I was very sick during the first trimester and the first few weeks of the second trimester. I really wanted to plant a winter garden, but could not do at that time. After the nausea subsided, I found a short period of time in which I was able to combat the constant fatigue and get things done. It’s nice but short.

Yoga – I’ve always loved yoga. I discovered prenatal yoga classes during pregnancy and have since started. I don’t know what I would have done without it. I went to this class with aches and pains and left feeling amazing. I also picked up a lot of good forward movements that helped with my back pain. One of my favorites is the breath switching between cats and cows.

Gloves – I don’t wear gloves in the garden, but I’m pregnant now. The main reason is that I am currently fighting my neighbour’s cat and trying to stop it from using my garden as a litter box. It was disgusting and annoying at first. Second, toxoplasmosis is not a problem and is even more of a problem during pregnancy. My husband builds a fence to keep cats out (more to come!) And collects cat litter that he finds in the garden. But I still wear gloves when I dig the ground.
Water and snacks – In the first and second trimesters, I felt nauseous and dizzy. It’s impossible to underestimate how it helped me to drink electrolyte water and eat small, frequent snacks. Especially when working in the garden! I had to visit my pregnant friend for a few days, and when the maid took me to the back garden, I was shocked to see my friend cut through the window. 2. Bring water – especially if it’s hot, make sure you drink enough water! Bring an insulated refrigerator with ice water outside if you can and drink it if needed. Staying hydrated is very important during pregnancy.
3. Work early or late in the day – This is good for everyone, but especially for pregnant women who are sensitive to heat. Try to do most of your work outdoors in the morning or later in the evening so as not to lose heat during the day. Working in the morning before sunrise or at 6am when the sun is still rising but the ‘flare’ is gone can be fun, especially if it’s windy! Don’t wear a wide-brimmed hat, even if the sun is shining!
4. Ask for help – you don’t have to do everything yourself. And especially if there is weight lifting, you may not be able to. Ask for help from your spouse or friend who is not pregnant to pick up or reach for what you cannot. In most cases, you can do it yourself, but feel free to ask when you need to.
