About 800 women a year receive free pregnancy tests, counseling and other services at the El Cajon, California, center. The clinic encourages its clients not to have abortions, but the new law requires its services to prominently post information about where abortions can be found.
Avoiding Crisis Pregnancy Centers
The latest front in the religious freedom debate concerns an 8 1/2 x 11 inch piece of paper.
This particular paper is a warning: the state of California should soon publish in places called crisis pregnancy centers. These resource centers, often affiliated with religious organizations, offer low-cost or free services to pregnant women and encourage these women not to have abortions.
The new notice is mandated by the Reproductive FACT Act and makes clear that abortion is legal in California.
It’s like asking Alcoholics Anonymous to put up a big sign that says alcohol and free alcohol.
How To Get Free Ec In Texas
The East County Pregnancy Care Clinic in El Cajon, California, outside San Diego, is one of the clinics involved in the case. The center describes itself as a “religious, non-religious, non-profit, free medical clinic licensed by the State of California.” It is located on the corner of a busy intersection surrounded by shopping centers.
A large sign outside the door reads “FREE PREGNANCY TESTS.” According to executive director Josh McClure, it’s a way to get women in the door.
McClure is not a doctor, although a medical consultant is a doctor, he says. When we visited her recently, she did not allow us to speak to the clinic staff, who are all nurses or volunteers. But he offered to show us what happens to clients who come to the clinic thinking they are pregnant and to walk us through the process.
Most of these women make appointments, but come to the clinic once or twice a day. The staff serves about 800 women each year and the trend is increasing.

First, clients fill out paperwork in the lobby, he explains, and then they’re assigned to volunteers, whom he calls “lawyers.”
These volunteer advocates, who are not medical professionals, take the client to a small room called the library. There the volunteer guides the client through the conversation about the situation.
McClure says she asks her volunteer clients several questions to address these issues: “Why do you think you’re pregnant? Are you living with someone? Husband, boyfriend? Her life? What are you thinking about now that the pregnancy is over?”
; Anatomical models showing the size of the fetus in the fourth week of gestation, eighth week of gestation, etc.; and VHS tapes about abortion and abortion providers. According to McClure, the tapes date from the 1970s and are rarely used.

After speaking with an attorney and reading brochures, the client is taken to an exam room for a pregnancy test.
The exam room looks like any other medical exam room, with clean linoleum floors, health brochures, and a box of rubber gloves on the counter. In the center of the room is an examination table with white tissue paper on it.

California Law Adds New Twist To Abortion, Religious Freedom Debate
There, a nurse collects a urine sample and gives the patient a sample file to take a pregnancy test, McClure says. They say it’s the same test you can buy at a pharmacy, but here it’s free and funded by donations. Sign the RN results.
If the pregnancy test is positive, the nurse tells the client that she has three options: foster care, adoption, or abortion.
“Let’s talk about the benefits, liabilities and side effects of all three,” says McClure. “If it’s an unwanted pregnancy, we say there really aren’t any good solutions. They’re all tough.”
When talking about parenting, caregivers talk about the responsibilities of an 18-year-old attachment to another human life and the resources that can be helpful in the client’s life. The nurse asks if a friend or husband will be involved.

When it comes to adoption, the clinic looks at several options: family adoption, local or national adoption, and open or closed adoption. According to McClure, the clinic works with a variety of adoption agencies and refers clients to the one that best suits their needs.
“We let them know that if there’s substance abuse and you don’t have your life in order until the child gets here, [Child Protective Services] will come and take that child away,” she says.
McClure tells us that when it comes to abortion, nurses don’t tell clients where to get an abortion or refer them to an abortion provider. But he talks about the risks and costs of abortion from the perspective of the clinic.
“Generally,” says McClure, “as you go along, it gets more expensive and invasive, and there are risks. The risk of infertility is one thing. A perforated uterus is another. And then, of course, the emotional side effects, all of them. the information we give about side effects is backed by research and cited.”
Reasons Your Pregnancy Test Gave A False Positive
McClure failed to mention during our tour that some of the claims in the pamphlet used to train the clinic’s nurses and volunteers have been disputed by major research institutions. For example, the National Cancer Institute and other medical groups have investigated and rejected the idea that there may be a link between abortion and breast cancer risk.
The clinic’s brochure notes that abortion “significantly increases the risk” of conditions such as “clinical depression and anxiety” and “suicidal thoughts and behaviors.” But the American Psychological Association took a different view in a recent review of mental health and abortion, acknowledging that “abortion encompasses a variety of experiences.”
According to a 2008 APA task force report, “The best published scientific evidence suggests that adult women with an unintended pregnancy who undergo a miscarriage in the first year are not at increased risk for mental health problems if they undergo one trimester at the time. of childbirth. These are the mental health issues associated with multiple miscarriages.”
A pregnant woman at McClure’s clinic is led to a room where she can get a free ultrasound after a staff member explains how her institution assesses the risk of miscarriage.
Treatment For Mild Chronic Hypertension During Pregnancy
There, according to McClure, the ultrasound image is displayed on a large flat-screen TV. Women often choose not to have an abortion after seeing an ultrasound.
“When you have an image on a screen, the whole fog of what we’re talking about goes away,” McClure says. “You can see for yourself: OK, arms, legs, eyes, head. Bingo – it’s a baby.”

None of these things, not one step in the process, should change under the Reproductive Truth Act.
Instead, facilities like the East County Pregnancy Care Clinic are required by law to post a 22-point sign in the lobby:
